Accurate Color and Tonal Gradation

To reproduce accurate color and tonality you need only two simple concepts: even lighting and end-to-end consistency. Yet the devil is in the details. Every piece of equipment, from lights to camera to display to output, and every scene must be measured with a calibration tool. Then light sources must be carefully arranged, measured, and adjusted to evenly illuminate the artwork while producing zero reflections. If the process sounds technical and tedious, that's because it most certainly is technical and tedious! Experience and attention to detail can save you time and headache.

Faithful Reproduction of Intricate Textures

Accurate reproduction is about more than color. Often times paint textures and heavy brushstrokes, an important part of the artist's expression, are lost in translation. The same goes for fine fissures, imperfections in glazing, and other qualities that speak to an artifact's age or history. Crosshatching, metallic finishes, and even the texture of common canvas can translate poorly if not handled well. Careful lighting techniques and other processes can make all of these problems disappear from the final reproduction.

Polarization, Perspective, Compositing...

Manipulation is sometimes required in order to create a faithful reproduction. This is especially true for projects that include mixed media, warped canvases, or other special cases. An image might require subtle structural corrections to maintain straight lines. Or multiple exposures might be taken with optical filters, then later combined using specialized software.
